Malik releases plan for rebuilding Akron’s economy

Shammas Malik’s campaign for Mayor of Akron has released its Working Together plan.

The plan is aimed at ensuring every Akron resident has the opportunity to build a prosperous life, according to Malik’s campaign website.

The plan outlines five components: making it easier for businesses of all sizes to build and grow in Akron; improving downtown through basic amenities and community development; supporting business and workforce development within Akron’s neighborhoods; removing barriers that make it hard for people to find meaningful work; and investing in innovative jobs and local research and development.

Malik noted the importance of acknowledging Akron’s economic trajectory.

“For more than 50 years, we’ve lost population and jobs, and that trend continues today,” he said. “So the question for our city’s economic future is, what are we going to do differently?”

Malik pointed to the need to tackle safety, education, and housing as key components to stabilizing population loss and building a new economy – the other core tenants of his vision for Akron’s future.

Working Together is one of four plans Malik’s campaign is releasing as part of his vision for Akron’s future. The campaign released its Safer Together plan last week, and in the coming weeks, will be sharing initial plans for health, housing, and the environment, as well as education. The campaign also will be hosting community dialogue sessions, inviting community members to join in discussions about each of these issue areas before releasing final detailed plans in early spring.
